Desalination of Betaine

【Project Overview】

Betaine is a natural compound with significant application value, widely used in feed, food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. During its production process, the reaction liquor typically contains high salt concentrations (e.g., sodium chloride), which severely affects the final product's purity, quality, and downstream applications. Traditional desalination technologies often face challenges such as low efficiency, significant product loss, and high operating costs when handling such high-salinity, high-organic-content feed streams.

This project aims to employ advanced selective electrodialysis integrated with membrane separation technology to perform deep desalination and purification on a feed solution containing ≤34% betaine and ≤13% salt. The core objective is to produce a solution with high betaine content and excellent purity, wherein the produced freshwater stream must consistently exhibit an electrical conductivity below 200 µS/cm, while simultaneously ensuring a high betaine recovery rate, thereby achieving significant economic benefits and product upgrading.

【Project Highlights】

  • Deep Desalination & Exceptional Product Purity
The system consistently maintains the product water conductivity below 200 µS/cm. This indicator, far exceeding conventional requirements, signifies the profound removal of salts and results in a betaine product of extremely high purity, capable of meeting the stringent standards of high-end feed, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications.
  • Outstanding Selective Separation & High Yield
Precision Molecular-Level Separation: Betaine molecules and sodium ions possess different charge characteristics. The electrodialysis technology effectively retains the larger betaine molecules, thereby ensuring a betaine recovery rate greater than 97% while efficiently removing salts. This significantly enhances raw material utilization and project economics.
  • Stable & Reliable Handling of High-Salinity Feed
The project is designed to directly process concentrated salt feeds with salt content up to 13%, demonstrating the system's strong tolerance and treatment capability for high-salinity, high-organic wastewater, ensuring stable operation and strong adaptability.
